Before trading an economic release in a futures prop account, check five controls in order: account stage, the firm's event calendar, the exact restricted window, the treatment of positions and orders, and any payout or strategy test that still applies. “News trading is allowed” does not mean every product, account stage, order, or execution is unrestricted.
That distinction is visible in the current rules. Tradeify publishes no news-event restriction, but its funded-account microscalping test can still block a payout. Alpha Futures allows unrestricted evaluation trading, yet applies a four-minute no-execution window to Direct, Standard, and Zero Qualified accounts. Topstep generally permits positions through releases, while its current high-volatility controls can temporarily restrict new opening transactions, products, and size.
The five checks
- Name the firm, product, and account stage. Write the full combination—such as Alpha Standard Evaluation, Alpha Standard Qualified, Topstep $1.5K Challenge, or Tradeify Sim Funded. A rule from another stage is not a substitute.
- Use the calendar the firm names. Alpha designates red-folder Forex Factory events. Topstep publishes common release times and sends dashboard or email notices for temporary restrictions. For government releases, confirm the agency's own schedule too; BLS says its calendar is updated as needed.
- Calculate the restricted window in the source timezone. “Two minutes before and after” means a scheduled 8:30 AM ET event creates an 8:28–8:32 AM ET window. Do not silently convert ET, CT, or your platform's local time.
- Separate holding, opening, pending, and executed orders. A firm may permit an existing position but prohibit a new opening transaction or any execution. A resting order that fills is an execution even when it was placed earlier.
- Check the consequence beyond the trade. A fill may be allowed yet still face slippage, a strategy-duration test, profit voiding, payout delay, or an account warning. Save the relevant rule and dashboard notice before the event.
Current rules at a glance
| Firm and stage | Can hold through a release? | Can open or execute during the event? | Additional control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Topstep standard SIM and Funded accounts | Generally yes; the economic-releases page does not require flattening | Generally yes, but current risk adjustments can override with product-, size-, or event-specific limits | CPI controls restrict new openings for listed products; current Labs challenges can be more restrictive |
| Topstep $1.5K or $3K Labs Challenge | Check the current dashboard notice | CPI trading is currently restricted to zero | Some products are unavailable and MGC/MCL limits are reduced |
| Tradeify Evaluation | Yes within the trading session | Yes; no news restriction is published | All positions still must be closed by 4:45 PM ET on regular days |
| Tradeify funded accounts | Yes within the trading session | Yes; no news restriction is published | More than 50% of trades and more than 50% of profit must come from trades held longer than 10 seconds to request a payout |
| Alpha Futures Evaluation | Yes | Yes; no news restriction is published | General prohibited-practice and risk rules still apply |
| Alpha Advanced Qualified | Yes | Yes; no news restriction is published | “All or nothing” or gambling behavior remains prohibited |
| Alpha Direct, Standard, or Zero Qualified | Yes, when consistent with the trading plan | No order may execute from two minutes before through two minutes after a related red-folder event | First violation warns and voids affected profit; later violations can breach the account |
This table is a starting point, not permission to trade. Temporary controls and dashboard notices can be more current than an evergreen help article.
Topstep: broad permission with temporary overrides
Topstep's economic-releases policy says traders do not have to flatten during releases in SIM or Funded Accounts. It also warns that slippage is normal in fast markets and that trades affected by releases are not eligible for exceptions or reset credits.
The current high-risk and high-volatility page adds the important override. Topstep may temporarily tighten size or remove products. Its CPI section currently blocks new opening transactions in listed equity-index and metal minis during the five minutes before and after the release, caps micros by account size, allows management of listed metal positions opened before 7:25 AM CT, and prevents pending orders from filling in the window. The $1.5K and $3K Labs challenges are currently restricted to zero during CPI.
The practical answer is to check both the evergreen economic-release rule and the live risk-adjustment notice. A broad “you may hold” rule and a narrow “you may not open” control can both be true at the same time. The Topstep CPI restrictions guide explains the same distinction in more depth.
Tradeify: no news window, but funded strategy tests remain
Tradeify says it has no rules against or guidelines around trading news events. That means there is no published event-specific blackout window for evaluation, simulated-funded, or live accounts. It does not remove ordinary account controls.
For funded accounts, Tradeify's microscalping rule requires more than half of trades to last longer than 10 seconds and more than half of profit to come from trades held longer than 10 seconds. Missing either test prevents a payout request. The rule does not apply during evaluation.
Every Tradeify account must also be flat by 4:45 PM ET on a regular trading day, with a separate shortened-holiday cutoff. A news release never extends that session boundary. Traders comparing the product paths can use the Tradeify Growth, Select, and Lightning guide before applying a funded-stage rule.
Alpha Futures: the account stage changes the answer
Alpha Futures publishes three different answers. Evaluation accounts have no news-trading restriction. Advanced Qualified accounts also have no dedicated news restriction, although prohibited trading practices still apply. Direct, Standard, and Zero Qualified accounts may hold positions through a release but may not have an order execute within two minutes before or after a related high-impact event.
Alpha uses red-folder events on Forex Factory and applies the window to the listed start time of high-impact speeches. A first violation voids the profit on the affected trade, denies the payout, and delays the next request while preserving the account as a warning; a later violation after warning can breach the account.
The key action is to label the stage in the trading plan. “Alpha allows news trading” is accurate for an evaluation but incomplete for a Standard Qualified account. The Alpha Standard versus Advanced comparison shows why the stage choice matters beyond news windows.
Worked example: an 8:30 AM ET release
Suppose a USD-related high-impact event is scheduled for 8:30 AM ET and affects the contract being traded.
- Alpha Direct, Standard, or Zero Qualified: no order may execute from 8:28 AM through 8:32 AM ET. A position may be held, but a stop, target, limit, market, or strategy order that executes in the window is still an execution.
- Topstep: the evergreen page does not create a universal 8:28–8:32 blackout. Check the live risk-adjustment notice. For a CPI release, current product and size controls apply during Topstep's published 10-minute window.
- Tradeify: no news-specific window is published. The funded microscalping test, session-close deadline, daily loss controls, and slippage exposure still apply.
When the rule language leaves any doubt about an order type, do not infer permission from silence. Ask support in writing and keep the answer with the account terms.
A release-day worksheet
Before the session, record:
- firm, account product, stage, account number, and platform;
- event name, scheduled time, source timezone, affected contract, and controlling calendar;
- restricted start and end time, allowed size, and whether holding is permitted;
- treatment of new openings, closing orders, resting orders, brackets, and automation;
- payout, duration, consistency, daily-loss, and maximum-loss controls;
- link or screenshot of the current help article, dashboard banner, email, and support clarification;
- a personal no-entry time and a separate flat-or-cancel time.
After the event, save order IDs, timestamps, intended and actual prices, realized and unrealized P&L, and the account-status panel. If fills or account calculations conflict with the published rule, the platform incident evidence checklist shows what to preserve before contacting support.
Bottom line
The safest way to read a prop firm's news rule is as a stack, not a yes-or-no label. Identify the exact account stage, verify the controlling event, calculate the source-timezone window, distinguish holding from execution, and check the downstream payout test. Recheck on the event day because temporary product restrictions can supersede the general policy.
